Itinerary
Day 1
Fly London to Rome on an early flight and transfer to Star Clipper for your seven-night full-board cruise. Once on board, take some time to explore this stunning four-masted tall ship and greet the small number of fellow travellers.
Day 2 – AT SEA
Each Star Clippers ship offers a traditional and elegant way to see the world. Feel the wind fill the sails and gently carry you from one gorgeous destination to the next. During your time on board, you can choose to relax on a sun lounger or cool off in one of the pools on the top deck, while more adventurous passengers may enjoy the opportunity to climb the rigging or even have a go at steering the ship. Alternatively, you can wander the interior areas of the ship and discover relaxing lounges and a peaceful library.
Day 3 – Aeolian Islands
Italy's seven volcanic Aeolian Islands, just off the north coast of Sicily, are obviously a place favoured by the Gods. In Lipari, climb narrow streets to the medieval castello and enjoy a secluded beach. As Star Clipper sails past Isola Strómboli, watch the sky for frequent volcanic fireworks.
Day 4 – Sicily
Messina was a major transport hub for centuries and remains a gateway to the island of Sicily. Messina is home to one of Sicily’s finest cathedrals which has the largest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock of the world. Make sure you try the lemon granita (shaved ice), or the famous mezza con panna al caffè, a half glass of coffee-flavoured granita and cream..
Day 5 – Amalfi Coast
During the Middle Ages, Amalfi was a powerful republic of 70,000 people, rivalling nearby Ravello. For a sense of Amalfi's medieval glory, wander through the grand Duomo, containing the remains of St. Andrew. In the evening we visit nearby Positano, said to be the most beautiful town in the Mediterranean.
Day 6 – Sorrento
The city walls rise straight out of the sea, is located on the lovely Amalfi Coast and overlooks the Bay of Naples. Optional excursions might include taking a trip back in history to Pompeii, where the ashen remains of ancient Romans lie frozen in time.
Day 7 – Pontine Islands
The pastel houses of Ponza Town rise in neat terraced rows from the busy harbour where sleekly groomed yachts and ramshackle fishing boats moor side by side. Happily, there are few tourists here, so it's a delight to wander through the unspoiled town.
Day 8 to 9 –Rome.
Disembark Star Clipper and transfer to your hotel in Rome for a two-night stay in the “Eternal City”. You’ll have a full day at leisure to uncover the mysteries and ancient treasures of the enigmatic Italian capital.
Day 10 to 11 – Florence
Travel by rail through the unmistakable Tuscan countryside to Florence, for another two-night stay in this great city of art. Take your free day to examine the prodigious works on display at the Uffizi Gallery, and stroll the venerable streets to the Ponte Vecchio.
Day 12 – Orient Express
You’ll be transferred from your hotel to board the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. A blend of sumptuous cuisine, attentive service and an unrivalled atmosphere of a time gone by combine for an overnight journey you’ll never forget!
