An explosion of autumn colour, polar bears, relaxing by an open fire in a log lodge and a chance to see (weather depending) the Northern Lights. It’s an experience that will last a lifetime.
We invite you to immerse yourself in our Colours and Lights Arctic Adventure and sample for yourself the beauty and wonder that Canada has to offer. Your base for this amazing trip will be the historic town of Churchill. Situated on Hudson Bay in the far north of Manitoba, it’s famous for the polar bears that move from inland towards the shore in Autumn, earning it the nickname “Polar Bear Capital of the World”.
At the end of an adventure packed day, you’ll return to Lazy Bear Lodge. Reflective of the natural beauty of the Arctic Tundra, the Lodge has been built using reclaimed timber and materials dating back to the 1800s and has a certain rustic charm in keeping with the environment.
Your adventure starts in Winnipeg. Packed with exciting tours, it’s a wonderland just waiting to be discovered. And of course, there is the opportunity to catch the elusive Northern Lights.
During your stay you will have the opportunity to take part in:
A cultural and heritage tour of the Churchill area
A helicopter tour (approximately 1.5 hours)
A boat tour (approximately 1 hour)
Opportunity to see the Northern Lights
There are a number of excursions included in your trip. Our itinerary will give you a few ideas about what you can expect to experience on the day.
Day 1 Winnipeg
The Capital Beckons
Your fun starts in Winnipeg. The capital of the province of Manitoba, at the heart of the city is The Forks. A historic site situated at the intersection of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, this cultural city is home to The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to name but a few. After you’ve checked in to your Winnipeg hotel, you have the rest of the day free to explore this vibrant and interesting city for yourself.
Day 2 Winnipeg - Churchill
Polar Bear Capital of the World
Leaving Winnipeg behind, we depart for the airport to make our way to Churchill. Once you’ve settled into The Crazy Bear Lodge, it’s time for your first adventure. Our Cultural and Heritage Tour of the Churchill area includes historic Cape Merry and an outside tour of the Polar Bear Jail. The jail was established to try and quash the number of bear killings that took place. A holding facility for live bears that are considered dangerous, the bears are isolated before being relocated.
It’s then time to try your hand at dog mushing (sled ride). A husband and wife team, you’ll get to enjoy some local treats whilst our dog mushers fill you in on the history of dog mushing and regale you with entertaining stories, before taking you on your very own exhilarating ride.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
Day 3 Churchill
The Tundra from Above
The day starts with an exhilarating ‘soar’ by helicopter over the vast Tundra. As well as views of the magnificent coastline of Hudson Bay and the town of Churchill, you’ll also get the opportunity to spot some of the exotic local wildlife. Keep your eyes open for Polar Bears, Beluga Whales, Moose, Caribou, Red and Arctic Fox, Ptarmigan and Arctic Hare. Later on in the day, you’ll also get the chance to attend a Parks Canada presentation.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
Day 4 Churchill
River Cruising
Another packed day, we start the day’s activities with a cruise down the Churchill River, where you’ll get a chance to meet and greet the “Ambassadors of the North”, the gentle, yet curious Beluga whales.
It’s then time to immerse yourself in the customs and traditions of the indigenous people, with a trip to the Itsanitaq museum.
Taking to the water again, we board our Arctic Crawlers™ for a Tundra tour to the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, where you’ll get a chance to see the polar bears up close.
As if that wasn’t enough adventure for one day, our final excursion is a walking tour, accompanied by an interpretive talk, in the Boreal Forest.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
Day 5 Winnipeg
The Rocket Range
It’s your final day in Churchill. But before you check out, you will get to enjoy an interpretive guided hike to the Rocket Range and a walking tour of the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. Then it’s on to Winnipeg where you check in to your hotel for a final night.
