Starting and ending in Reykjavik, the cruise takes in some of the most iconic wildlife and landscapes.
Your adventure kicks off in the beautiful city of Reykjavik, a volcanic island made up of hot springs, geysers, glaciers and powerful waterfalls. As with all capital cities, it pulsates with life, yet it still manages to retain a cosy charm. During summer, the sun makes an appearance more or less 24 hours a day. And Reykjavik makes the most of the eternal sun!

Day 1: Reykjavik
The northernmost capital city in the world, Reykjavik named after the columns of steam that rise from the many hot springs in the area literally means “Smokey Bay”. It’s well worth taking advantage of the 24-hour sun and exploring this vibrant city before embarking on your ship.
Day 2: At Sea
As we leave Iceland, we cross The Denmark Strait. An oceanic strait between Greenland and Iceland, it’s the same route that was used by the Vikings to migrate from Iceland to Greenland over 1000 years ago. As well as enjoying the stunning scenery you’ll be able to make the most of your time at sea and learn more about local history and biology in readiness for your upcoming destinations.
Day 3: Scoresbysund fjord
Heading south, we reach Scoresbysund fjord, where we will attempt a landing. The world’s largest fjord system, it is 600m deep and extends 350km inland. Stunningly beautiful, white and blue icebergs float in the still waters of the fjord.
The deep basalt mountains create a stunning backdrop, reaching in places up to 2000m. Providing shelter from the winds, the fjord has become a haven for an unusual abundance of Greenlandic wildlife.
Muskox, arctic foxes, reindeer, mountain hares and an abundance of birdlife call the land home, whilst various species of seals dominate the shores and the clear waters below.
Day 4: North East Greenland National Park
Another great day of exploration lies ahead. Not only is this the largest National Park in the world, it’s the least visited too! Keen to conserve the environment, only a small number of expeditions are permitted to visit the park in the short summer season and thanks to our experience and expertise here, we are always one of them.
Literally with the exception of science research stations, a couple of military outposts and trapper huts, there is no other trace of human life.
Large fjords, alpine landscapes, hanging glaciers and gargantuan icebergs dominate the landscape. An abundance of wildlife – hares, muskoxen and Arctic foxes also share this rugged terrain. Your captain and Expedition Leader will work together to assess the ice conditions and will choose the best locations for landings.
Day 5: Ittoqqortoormiit
Wrapped in ice for nine months of the year, Ittoqqortoormiit is home to less than 500 people and is the most remote inhabited settlement in the western hemisphere. Visiting Ittoqqortoormiit is a special treat and the local people will be happy and proud to show you around the community.
Day 6: At Sea
After the excitement of Greenland, it’s time to set course for our return journey to Iceland.
Learning and having fun in the Science Centre, spotting whales and birds, or simply relaxing on deck: however you decide to spend your time, there’s plenty to do onboard.
Day 7: Reykjavik
We return to Reykjavik early in the morning – why note make the most of time whilst you are here and explore more of the country before you head home.
The Hurtigruten line was originally launched to transport people and goods along the coast of Norway. It was particularly prevalent in winter when infrastructure was still in its infancy and land travel was generally more difficult.
They are though, not traditional cruise ships and life on board a Hurtigruten ship is vastly different to what you might expect onboard a traditional cruise liner and offers less in terms of entertainment. However, as a majority of their ships are much smaller than traditional cruise ships (150 – 500 passengers as opposed to 1000s) it means that they can enter the fjords in both winter and summer. And because they stop at so many ports, you will get to see more of the coastline as opposed to just the ‘highlights’.
They also don’t fall short when it comes to comfort and amenities. The cabins are all elegantly furnished with a choice of cabin to suit all budgets. The MS Fridtjof Nansen is the latest addition to Hurtigruten’s fleet of custom-built ships and is hailed as the next generation expedition ship.
The ship has three restaurants that offer a variety of dining options, with menus drawn from our rich Norwegian and Nordic tradition, as well as international cuisine and local inspiration.
