The Stunning Coastline of The Isle of Wight

Four miles off the South Coast of England, the Isle of Wight is renowned for its beautiful scenery and glorious beaches. But the Island has much more to offer than just idyllic beaches and a stunning coastline. Over half of the island has been designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. It is also home to the Osborne estate. Bought in 1845 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, they set about building a new mansion, which would ultimately become their retreat from court life. Open to the public, Osborne House gives an exquisite peek into their lives.

Restored Beauty

There’s no better way to discover this picturesque island than by rail. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway originally opened in 1862 but eventually closed in 1966. Saving some of the rolling stock and carriages for preservation, railway enthusiasts re-opened the line for use in in 1971. The locomotives and carriages have been lovingly restored and promise an unforgettable experience.

Our 5-day adventure through the unspoilt countryside takes in the very best that the Isle of Wight has to offer. Join us as we:

  • Travel through the heart of the island on the historic Isle of Wight Steam Railway
  • Take a look back at royal Victorian life with a visit to Osborne House and Gardens
  • Visit the lovely village of Godshill and the harbour town of Yarmouth
  • Explore the stunning cliffs of Needle Park
  • Unearth a piece of history at Carisbrooke castle

Day 1: Portsmouth & Sandown

Take to the Sea

Meeting in Portsmouth, you’ll board the catamaran for the short journey to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, where you’ll pick up the rail service on route to Sandown, your base for the next four nights. The Victorian resort of Sandown has delightful sandy beaches and views over the English Channel.

Day 2: Osborne House

Discover Queen Victoria’s Retreat

Your day starts with a visit to the ornate church, St Mildred’s in Whippingham and is followed by a stop at Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s family holiday home. Day 3: Tour of The Island

Tour of The Island

Brace yourself for an exciting day as we take a panoramic tour around the island. Starting at the stunning cliffs of Needles Park, we’ll take in some of the island’s best attractions. Needles Park with its distinctive stacks of chalk rising majestically from the sea is an iconic landmark.

Our next port of call is Yarmouth, a charming port town dating back over 1000 years, on the opposite side of the island to Sandown. Over the centuries the French have raided the town – it is even said that the bells from the original church are either in Cherbourg or Boulogne. Our final stops of the day are Carisbrooke Castle and the attractive village of Godshill.

Heritage Railway

Today is all about the Isle of Wight’s heritage railway. The fully restored carriages and locomotives promise a wistful experience as you are taken back to a golden age of rail. Sit back and relax as you pass through lush woodland, quaint towns and lavish meadows. We’ll be making a final stop to Havenstreet to visit the Carriage and Wagon Workshop.
