East of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the picturesque Victorian spa town of Harrogate is home to just 75,000 residents. Although it boasts acres of green space, it has many amenities, all within walking distance. Popular amongst fashionable Victorians for its restorative treatments, the Turkish Baths and Health Spa as it is now known still offers spa treatments today.

You’ll be met by your Tour Manager at The Crown Hotel in time for dinner. Then, after dinner, you’ll be taken on a short-guided walk to experience some of the best spots that Harrogate has to offer.

Discover the History of York

Your second day will see you boarding the train to nearby York, where you’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of the main sights. Influenced by its Viking, Roman and medieval heritage, York is guaranteed not to disappoint. The tour takes in sights such as the 12^th century Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. Dominating the City skyline, the Minster, with its triple-naved Choir Aisle, stained glass narrow lancet windows and vaulted tower is a pure masterpiece.

You’ll also get to visit the Shambles, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval streets. The tour ends, fittingly, at the famous National Railway Museum. Boasting over 100 different locomotives, including a replica of George Stephenson’s Rocket, Queen Victoria’s own saloon railway carriage and a 1960s Japanese Shinkansen Bullet train. For many, the museum is sure to be the highlight of the tour.

You’ll start your day with an excursion by coach to Whitby, a popular seaside resort on the east coast. Yorkshire’s most famous son, Captain James Cook, served his apprenticeship in Whitby in 1746. Also celebrated for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula – the gothic culture is evident and reflected in the town’s quirky streets, shops and Abbey ruins. The Abbey, with its panoramic views across the coast, is well worth a visit.

Travelling back in style, you’ll join the nostalgic North Yorkshire Moors Railway for the return journey. But before you sit back and bask in the rolling moorland vistas, you’ll get a chance to enjoy some of the finest fish and chips that Whitby is renowned for. Back in Harrogate once again, you’ll get to round off your evening with a three-course, Yorkshire-themed dinner.

The History of Rail

We travel to Ingrow for a trip on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Designed originally to supply the local mills with coal, the railway was first opened to traffic in 1867. This fantastic trip up the Worth Valley takes in the beautiful scenery made famous by the iconic 1970s film ‘The Railway Children’. You’ll learn more about the history of the railway with the on-train commentary before arriving at Oxenhope, where you’ll get the chance to visit the Vintage Carriage Museum and goods shed.

Your journey continues to the charming village of Haworth, once home to the famous Brontë sisters. Wild, rural, yet incredibly beautiful, the harsh moorland was a rich source of inspiration for the sisters.

The End of The Journey

Your journey ends where it started in Harrogate. If you have time before returning home, why not enjoy some of the delights that this beautiful Spa City has to offer. Over 100 years old, Betty’s Tearoom, a well-known tourist attraction, is a Yorkshire institution and well worth a visit.
