Flying from London your food journey starts in Oslo. The perfect introduction to Nordic cuisine, this stunning 1000-year-old capital sits at the top of Oslofjord and is bordered on one side by peaceful blue waters and on the other by lush, dense forests.

After spending two days in Oslo, you’ll fly to Kirkenes for the start of your 5-night cruise, sailing past the West Cape and crossing the Arctic Circle onto the North Cape, one of the northernmost points on the European continent. Your experience culminates with a fabulous seafood dinner in Bergen.

  • Delight your taste buds with cuisine from two of Norway’s best restaurants
  • Spend two days in Oslo and sample dining at the City’s oldest restaurant
  • Cross the Arctic Circle and enjoy around the clock daylight under the Midnight Sun
  • Enjoy a 5-night cruise to Bergen
  • Enjoy a memorable breakfast at the North Cape

Day 1: London - Oslo

Tickle your Tastebuds

You will fly from London to Norway’s capital, Oslo where you’ll be met by your Tour Leader, who will escort you to your hotel. Ideally situated, Clarion Hotel The Hub is within easy reach of the city’s best bars, cafes, shops and restaurants and is the perfect base to explore the city from.

Day 2: Oslo

Foodies Paradise

After breakfast, you’ll join the guided walking (3 hours) Oslo Beer Tour. As well as learning about the history and fun snippets of Oslo, your guide will also take you on a tour of Oslo’s most fashionable district visiting unique bars and breweries along the way. Of course, no tour would be complete without the chance to taste the beers – Jubel!

In the evening, you’ll get to enjoy a traditional Norwegian dining experience at Oslo’s oldest restaurant, Engebret Café. Famed for serving Norwegian home cooking since 1857, you’re guaranteed to enjoy good food in an authentic atmosphere.

Day 3: Oslo – Berlevåg

The Arctic Here We Come

Welcome to the second half of your Gastro adventure. After breakfast, you’ll fly to Kirkenes where you’ll pick up the ship for the start of the voyage. What can be more relaxing than enjoying a traditional Norwegian buffet style lunch as you meander through fjords flanked by a backdrop of mountains?

Day 4: Mehamn – Tromsø

Gateway to the North Cape

As we sail from Vardø, we head for Honningsvåg. The gateway to the North Cape, only the Svalbard islands separate you from the North Pole. As well as being the northernmost tip of Europe, it is also the heartland of the Sámi people. Reaching Honningsvåg first thing, you can look forward to a dramatic and scenic breakfast at the North Cape, overlooking the top of the world.

We dock at Tromsø late in the evening – perfect timing to take in a magical midnight concert at the Arctic Cathedral, or explore this magical city by boat under the Midnight Sun.

Day 5: Tromsø – Stamsund

Devour The Beauty of Lofoten

The islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen, renowned for their steep mountains, sandy beaches, wild nature and picturesque fishing villages, offer some of the most natural and stunning scenery of the entire voyage.

After a short stop at Risøyhamn, we continue to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded over 125 years ago. As we approach the narrow Raftsund channel, the 20km passageway opens up to a magnificent view of 1000 metre high mountains. Standing to attention on either side, these majestic granite mountains emerge straight up from the sea.

Day 6: Bodø – Rørvik

A Tasty Tradition

Join us as we celebrate crossing the Arctic Circle in true Arctic tradition – a fun ceremony highlighted by a spoonful of Cod Liver Oil. Not for the faint hearted!

As we continue to sail, we reach the Helgeland coast. Peppered with mountains, it’s home to Torghatten and the Seven Sisters mountain ranges. Torghatten, famous for its 160m long, 35m high and 20m wide distinct hole was created during the Ice Age. The Seven Sisters mountain range though is the stuff of true legend. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters got caught out at sunrise and turned to stone creating the beautiful peaks known as the Seven Sisters mountain range.

If you fancy something completely different, why not enjoy the stop and go ashore when we reach Brønnøysund. With a charming high and marina, there’s plenty to explore in this pretty little town.

Day 7: Trondheim

The Dried Cod Capital of Kristiansund

Our penultimate day takes us to the royal city of Trondheim. Large by Norwegian standards, Trondheim has managed to preserve the charm and intimacy of a small town. A catastrophic fire in 1681 destroyed most of the houses, however, many of the narrow alleys and streets that originated in the Middle Ages, still exist.

We then move on to Kristiansund, a city spread across four islands with a harbour that has been active since the Stone Age! Renowned for its centuries-old export of dried fish, today it is known as Norway’s ‘Cured Cod Capital’.

You can also join an excursion here along the famed Atlantic Road, a National Scenic Route. A remarkable opportunity to capture Norway’s wonderful rolling scenery from land, the 8km stretch of winding highway spans eight bridges, crosses picturesque landscapes and is surrounded by open sea.

Day 8: Bergen

Seafood Heaven

This lovely city, surrounded by mountains, was founded in 1070 AD and is steeped in history. Retaining much of its charm and character, it’s home to the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district and is one of the most photographed and recognisable areas in Norway.

Bergen is where your sea voyage comes to an end. But it’s not the end to your adventure. Your Tour Leader will once again take you to your hotel to check in and freshen up. You’ll then have the afternoon to explore this historic harbour town at your leisure.

In the evening, you will be whisked off by boat to Holmen Island to dine at one of Scandinavia’s best seafood restaurants, Cornelius. Renowned for its seafood, you will get to enjoy a seasonal fish and seafood feast.

Day 9: Bergen – London

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before checking out and heading back to London. We’re sure you’ll will have enjoyed this Nordic gastronomy adventure.

Life On-Board

The Hurtigruten line was originally launched to transport people and goods along the coast of Norway. It was particularly prevalent in winter when infrastructure was still in its infancy and land travel was generally more difficult. Even though there are now alternative means of transport, the Hurtigruten line still runs, calling at 34 ports along the Norwegian coastline.

They are though, not traditional cruise ships and life on board a Hurtigruten ship is vastly different to what you might expect onboard a traditional cruise liner and offers less in terms of entertainment. However, as a majority of their ships are much smaller than traditional cruise ships (150 – 500 passengers as opposed to 1000s) it means that they can enter the fjords in both winter and summer. And because they stop at so many ports, you will get to see more of the Norwegian coastline as opposed to just the ‘highlights’.

They also don’t fall short when it comes to comfort and amenities. The cabins are all elegantly furnished with a choice of cabin to suit all budgets. One of the most popular ships, the MS Polarlys, was refurbished in 2016. Featuring a modern, Arctic-inspired interior, there are three restaurants offering a range of different cuisine, a Multe bakery and ice cream bar, a sauna and fitness room. On deck you can while the time away and take in the view from one of the two hot tubs, or if you prefer, enjoy a drink at the bar at the front of the ship.

But Hurtigruten really does come into its own with its on-board Expedition team. Passionate and experienced about all things ‘Norwegian’, the team host lectures, presentation programmes and activities on a regular basis.

Features at a glance:

  • Expedition Team
  • Three restaurants
  • Multe bakery and ice cream bar
  • Explorer bar lounge
  • Wi-Fi
  • Sauna
  • Hot tubs
  • Fitness room
  • Conference room
  • Lift
  • Car deck
