Northern Lights Escape

Powerful waterfalls, geysers, a volcanic island made up of hot springs and Europe’s biggest glacier. Iceland has a rugged, unique beauty. Discover the splendour for yourself and unleash your inner explorer with our bespoke 6-day Northern Lights Escape. You will get up close to larger-than-life glacial sheaths, awaken your senses with the icy spray of the Gullfoss waterfall and become acquainted with the culture of the Arctic.

Designed with You in Mind

The Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis, as they are also known, are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. A natural display, the dancing light show lights up the night sky with an eerie glow. Travelling in our own private minibus (equipped with complimentary WiFi), we’ll head off the beaten track in search of this spectacular light show.

If you fancy more of an adventurous break, this is an experience you won’t want to pass up:

  • Follow the scenic ‘Golden Circle’ and discover geothermal springs and geysers
  • Take in the full force of the impressive Gullfoss waterfall
  • Visit the site of the nation’s first parliament at Thingvellir
  • Hike to Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier
  • Chase the Northern Lights in locations far off the beaten track

Day 1: Day 1 - Reykjavik

The Nation’s Capital

The northernmost capital city in the world, Reykjavik is named after the columns of steam, that rise from the many hot springs in the area literally means “Smokey Bay”. As with all capital cities, it pulsates with life, yet it still manages to retain a cosy charm. Your adventure begins with a Welcome Meeting at 6pm, giving you plenty of time to explore this beguiling city.

Rich in history, Reykjavik is a seamless blend of old and new, combining modernist architecture, impressive museums, lively bars and gastro delights. The spectacularly staggered Hallgrimskirkja church is a special highlight as is the Perlan. 61 metres above sea level, it is an immense glass dome that rests on six hot water tanks. Opened to the public in 1991, it features a real indoor ice cave, a 360 degree observation and much more.

Day 2: Day 2 - Golden Circle / Hvolsvollur Area

A Thrilling Adventure

We leave Reykjavik early in the morning and follow the route of the Golden Circle. Our first stop is Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland’s first parliament. Founded in AD930, it is a geological wonder where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart.

Our next stop is Iceland’s Geysir geothermal area where the Stokkur geyser literally shoots water 30 metres into the air. It is also the site of the immensely powerful Gullfoss waterfall.

Our final stop and where we’ll be spending the night is Hvolsvollur Valley. Far from the city, this traditional Icelandic farm has been converted into a guesthouse and is the perfect place to spot the Northern Lights.

Day 3: Day 3 - South Coast / Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Eerily Beautiful

We start the day with a trip to Skógafoss waterfall. Gargantuan, this giant of a waterfall is 25 metres wide and drops down 60 metres. You can get up close and feel the power of this waterfall for yourself from a stunning viewpoint (be warned it’s a long and windy set of steps). We continue along Iceland’s south shore taking in more of Iceland’s renowned natural wonders.

In the afternoon, we stop at the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a stunning sea of floating icebergs, before heading along the south coast to spend the night.

Day 4: Day 4 - Vatnajokull Glacier / Vik

Europe’s Biggest Ice Cap

With about 30 glaciers flowing out from it, Vatnajokull is Europe’s biggest ice cap. There will be the opportunity to take a hike on the cap, however, if you prefer a relaxing morning you can head out to explore the Thorbergur Centre.

Later in the day, we continue our journey onto the black sand seaside town of Vik. Nestled between the sea and high cliffs, this charming little village is Iceland’s most southerly mainland settlement.

Day 5: Day 5 - Reykjavik

City Life

We make our way to the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss before heading back to Reykjavik. To help you get acquainted with this remarkable city, a short-guided walk, taking in its landmark attractions and points of interest is included. While you’re here why not visit the old harbour, the city centre and the famous Hallgrimskirkja church. After all that sight-seeing, why not take the weight off your feet and enjoy a soak in the geothermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon.

Day 6: Day 6 - Reykjavik

And Relax

As it’s departure day, there are no activities planned for the day, so after a leisurely breakfast, why not make the most of your last day and take in some of the sights of the city that you haven’t yet got to see before you return home.
