Greenland Northern Lights

Visit the most populated city in Denmark and the world’s largest island all in one trip with our combined Copenhagen / Greenland adventure. Steeped in history and originally a Viking fishing village, Copenhagen dates back to the 10th century. The capital of Denmark since the 15th century, it has thrived to be the vibrant city that it is today. Stunning architecture, botanical gardens, canal tours, an abundance of restaurants to suit all tastes and even floating hot tubs: one thing you can guarantee is that you won’t be short of something to do in Copenhagen.

Ilulissat (meaning icebergs) is Greenland’s third-largest city and is some 350km north of the Arctic Circle. Situated at the mouth of the almost 60km long ice fjord, Ilulissat is home to just over 4500 people. Dog sledding is an important mode of transport and with 3500 sled dogs you can see why. Its sprawling icebergs rise majestically from the sea, adding a peaceful backdrop to the dramatic landscape. Yet it also boasts an abundance of wildlife. Ilulissat is certainly worth adding to your bucket list.

Two in One Adventure

Our 7-day bespoke adventure starts and finishes with the charms of cosmopolitan Copenhagen and is broken up with an exciting adventure in Ilulissat and the chance to glimpse the greatest light show on earth, The Northern Lights. Characterised by its iceberg-peppered fjord surrounds, you’ll get the chance to explore the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to one of the world’s most productive glaciers.

This 7-day tailor made experience has been designed with the adventurer at heart:

  • Explore the vibrant city of Copenhagen
  • Hunt for the Northern Lights
  • Explore a former Norse settlement
  • Close your eyes and listen to the cracking and rumbling echoes of the icebergs
  • Explore the charms of the Tivoli Gardens
  • Stroll along the picturesque port of Nyhavn

Day 1: Day 1 - Copenhagen

Wonderful Copenhagen

Fly in from London to Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen and spend the day sampling some of the many delights that this vibrant city has to offer. Winding canal walks and museums. Trendy coffee shops, rooftop bars and restaurants just waiting for you when you’re ready to take a break. However you choose to explore the city there’s plenty to see and do and there’s certainly something for everyone.

Day 2: Day 2 - Ilulissat

Icebergs!

After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll take a connecting flight to Ilulissat, on Greenland’s west coast before being taken to Hotel Arctic, your base for the next 4 nights. Once you’ve settled in, you’ve got the rest of the day to yourself to explore and familiarise yourself with the area. Icy fjords, interspersed with jagged, imposing icebergs await. Or perhaps you’d prefer to head to the charming fishing port, the local church or simply stroll alongside the glacier-dotted fjord. Wherever you decide to explore, remember to keep an eye on the sky – Ilulissat is ideally situated for the Northern Lights and the town is regularly treated to a magnificent light display.

After a busy day, relax and enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel. Using fresh, seasonal produce, it’s certainly not to be missed!

Day 3: Days 3-5 - Ilulissat

Silence is Golden

Spend the next three days taking in the splendour of the town and its surroundings. One of the best ways to get around Ilulissat is by dog sled. Why not head out on a dogsledding tour? It’s a 5-hour tour so you’re guaranteed not to miss out on any of the sights. Or if you prefer, take a cruise among the harbour’s ethereal icebergs and take in the almighty scenes of the Ilulissat Icefjord – home to the most productive glacier in the world.

If walking is your guilty pleasure, take a guided walk to a former Norse settlement on the ice fjord – you’ll get to learn about the fascinating history of Greenland. Or, for the more adventurous there are helicopter flights providing a fascinating glimpse of life in the Arctic from above. There are also aurora cruises running in the evening. Taking in the Northern Lights from the water – it’s the perfect way to end the day.

Day 4: Day 6 - Copenhagen

The City Beckons Once Again

Returning to Copenhagen for one final night, it’s the perfect opportunity to take in all those sights that you didn’t get time for at the start of your break. If you haven’t done it already – why not visit Tivoli Gardens? The charming, famous amusement park in central Copenhagen combines manicured gardens and roller coasters and has been attracting visitors since the 19th century.
