Discover Lakes and Dales by Steam

A mountainous region in the North West, the Lake District National Park boasts breath-taking lakes, soaring mountains, picturesque valleys and even a sandy coastline! Not just home to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, it also has the deepest and largest natural lakes.

This dramatic, unspoilt countryside with its cavernous lakes also became the inspiration for poets and writers in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was here that the poet William Wordsworth, inspired by the daffodils on the shores of Ullswater, wrote the poem, “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”. The children’s author Beatrix Potter used the magic of the Lake District for the setting of many of her Peter Rabbit books. With its spectacular scenery, wildlife, history and links to literature, if you’re considering a UK break this year, the Lake District should be right at the top.

Untapped Beauty

Our ‘Discover Lakes and Dales by Steam’ rail holiday takes in the rugged countryside of the north of England, including the untapped beauty of the world-famous Lake District. Travelling from Carlisle, you’ll journey by steam train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside, experience the splendour of The Settle to Carlisle Railway and take a journey on one of the oldest minimum-gauge heritage railways in England.

Our Lakes and Dales by Steam experience includes:

  • The Settle to Carlisle Railway – an unforgettable journey through the Yorkshire Dales National Park, including the 24-arched Ribblehead Viaduct
  • The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway – a rail journey like no other through the awe-inspiring scenery of the Leven Valley
  • The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway – a steam-hauled journey to Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park

Day 1: Carlisle

Historic Carlisle

Based out of Carlisle, your experience starts at the Hallmark Hotel. Situated in the city’s historic Court Square, this elegant Victorian building, close to the railway station, is the perfect base from which to explore. Dating back to the Roman times, Carlisle is rich in history and beautiful architecture. Carlisle Castle, built during the reign of William II, is certainly worth a visit. During the Industrial Revolution, Carlisle flourished as a centre for textile manufacturing and as such became a hub for the railways.

Your Tour Manager will meet you at the hotel and will take you through the itinerary for the next 5 days.

Includes Dinner

Day 2: Windermere

Meander Through The Countryside

A delightful journey by steam awaits as you travel from Haverthwaite to Lakeside on route to stunning Windermere, today’s destination. The line meanders through lush countryside and was part of the original Furness Railway when it opened in 1869.

When you arrive, you’ll travel by boat across the lake to Bowness where you’ll get time to yourself to take in the natural beauty that has inspired artists and writers for centuries. Experience for yourself the undulating hills, woods and moorlands that is the inspiration behind the fictional town of ‘Rio’ in Arthur Ransome’s famous series of novels ‘Swallows and Amazons’.

As we make our way back to Carlisle, we make a stop at the charming village of Grasmere that was once home to William Wordsworth.

Day 3: The Settle to Carlisle Railway

The Settle to Carlisle Railway

Sit back, relax and enjoy a remarkable journey to Skipton courtesy of the Settle to Carlisle Railway. Traversing through a varied landscape of hills, mountains, marshland and rivers, construction was long and arduous and took seven years to complete. Progress was slow and the line eventually opened in 1875. Shadowed by Whernside, one of Yorkshire’s highest peaks, the line meanders through the Yorkshire Dales and over the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. When we arrive, you’ll have some free time to explore Skipton before returning to Carlisle by rail.

Includes Breakfast

Day 4: The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway

Mountain Views

You’ll travel to Ravenglass by train before boarding the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to take a steam-hauled rail journey to Dalegarth. Opened originally in 1875, it is one of the oldest minimum-gauge heritage railways in England. With views across the highest mountain range in England, the scenery on this journey is truly awe-inspiring.

You’ll transfer to Muncaster in the afternoon where you’ll have some free time to enjoy some exploring on your own. Included in the trip to Muncaster is a visit to its castle.

Includes Breakfast and Dinner
